nancy kim
Nan(c(y)) Kim is an interdisciplinary artist and designer, whose work navigates across sculpture, sound and architecture. Their projects consider both time and “waste” as physical materials that transmute into portals to hidden stories. Their sonic moniker, Nyhne, explores feedback, drone, found sounds, ritual, and spoken word to form textural landscapes for catharsis. Nancy’s wearables project, GLU investigates gender fluidity, animism, and utility. The accessories series repurposes “scrap” materials from their previous installations and architectural projects. Over the past few years, it has become an understated iconic accessory of expression in rave spaces, such as Honcho Campout, Sustain Release, and Organik Festival in Taiwan, with many of the industry’s favorite artists, promoters, and dancers being the first to strut. All items are custom made to order in close collaboration. Color themes are developed in deep reverie on the individual’s aura and energy field. They have shown work at Reykjavik Art Museum (Iceland), A Guide to the Field (Mountaindale, NY), Arario Gallery (New York, NY), Van Alen Institute (New York, NY), and MIT Keller Gallery (Cambridge, MA). They hold degrees from Parsons School of Design (BFA), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.Arch), where they received The MIT Energy Initiative Grant, CAMIT Art Grant, and Louis C. Rosenberg Thesis Fellowship.
object feeling
“Object Feeling," a collaborative live performance with NYHNE, delved into garments as living systems, encapsulating profound emotions, life experiences, pain, and euphoria.
Performers intimately engaged with their companion pieces, while NYHNE's sound art adopted a unique "first-person" perspective of the garments. This facilitated a seldom-explored phenomenological exchange in the world of fashion.
Nancy's GLU wearables project explores themes of gender fluidity, animism, and utility. Notably, this accessory series ingeniously repurposed "scrap" materials from prior installations and architectural projects, echoing a commitment to sustainability. In a fashion landscape often focused on aesthetics, GLU encourages us to reflect on the meaningful stories and practicality that clothing can embody.
